Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this lesson, the student and I first worked on the SAT Writing section by practicing problems to see which grammar concepts he has mastered and which he still needs some work on. We talked through some of the things to check for and pay attention to. We spent the rest of the time working through some passages and he has improved a lot there, though he still does a lot better with the more factual vs. abstract passages."
"We went over the instructions on the math section of the SAT. This included the multiple choice and fill-in sections. We went over how to grid in a fraction, decimal, and mixed number and familiarized ourselves with the reference sheet that will be given to the students during the exam. We then went over the concept of absolute value, and looked at SAT questions that incorporate symbols such as stars as operators in equations."
"Today the pupil and I reviewed several sections of the SAT, including two math sections. Most notably, I had her write an abbreviated essay in 20 minutes. I instructed her to focus on the body of the essay. She still wrote an introduction, and it was so much more concise than her previous attempts -- it was just what I was looking for! Her body paragraphs also were better in their scope."
"The pupil is becoming more consistent in math and should work more on reading and writing. She should focus on reading and writing at exam club and math during daily practice. We finished a math and a writing section today. She will do math problems from her test prep book."
"We worked on writing at the start of the session, including sentence improvement and identifying sentence errors. Later we worked on math problems, including comparisons, percents and weighted percents."
"Today we worked on the writing section, discussing pronoun case and number agreement. We also spent about 20 minutes preparing for the math section."
"In this session, the pupil and I began by discussing the practice exam she completed over the weekend. After that, we completed SAT literature practice tests in preparation for her upcoming exam. She did very well on these; now she just needs more practice to further familiarize herself with the types of passages and questions on the exam. Next we continued working on the passage-based reading section of the SAT. We read a passage together and completed practice problems using many of the same skills necessary for the literature exam. For homework, she will complete more practice tests on SAT literature and passage-based reading."
"The student took a math practice test and scored very well. We spent today working on the writing section, including the essay. We discussed parallelism, subject-verb agreement, and noun-pronoun agreement, among other topics. She's going to take another practice test this week."
"I spent the first few minutes talking with the student and getting to know her. I told her what to expect on the test. We spent most of the session going over writing and math practice questions. I plan to teach her test-taking strategies, and she will improve as she becomes more familiar with the test. I am going to email her practice questions to complete before I see her again on Thursday."
"Today the student and I went over his essay writing. We discussed the rules of grammar and how to make stronger sentences. Additionally, we worked on improving the flow and transition of sentences. He appears to have internalized many of these concepts."
"We continued with passage-based reading. The student needed help with one of the passages from homework, but when we reviewed it slowly together and established main ideas in each paragraph, she became much more focused with the themes and was able to achieve a higher percentage of accuracy on her own. We also began working on the writing section so that it doesn't fall by the wayside."
"We reviewed a math section and targeted areas of weakness with extra problems. The student did a great job. She enjoys working on math sections and is becoming truly successful with them. For the next couple sessions, we will focus on reading and writing."
