Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"At the beginning of the session, student A showed me a story that she had written with her brother since our last meeting. We talked a little bit about how she started the story and how she planned to finish it. We also talked about special features; for example, she needed to add a discussion question in the middle because her brother wanted to use the story in class. After discussing the story for a few minutes, she worked on finishing The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Since we will be working on an essay based on the story, I asked her first to choose her favorite character (Lucy) and to make note of anything the character said or did while she was reading. After a short reading time (about 20 minutes), we worked on brainstorming essay ideas for her essay on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for a short time before student B arrived. After student B's arrival, we reviewed the events of the story from last session and covered new material from the second half of the book. Then, we briefly discussed some questions about characterization and themes in the book. I gave student B a writing assignment, but because she is at a higher writing level, I asked her to compare the characterization of her favorite character in both the movie and book. Finally, we ended the session by watching clips from the movie and discussing references between the two media. During this time, I asked student B to pay special attention to the movie vs book and for student A to focus on Lucy and her actions."
"The student did not work on reading this session. She was much more interested in working on her math. I think that overall, the series she is reading is a really good level for her. In math, the student is doing really well. We have been working on borrowing, which is something she has only worked on a little in school."
"I helped the student review her writing, reading and math word problems. We worked on checking her stories for mistakes and writing a story from web to final draft."
