Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Algebra. We reviewed properties of parabolas and methods for solving quadratic equations. Biology. We reviewed major concepts and vocab for chapter 17. The student was able to explain basic evolutionary processes and recognize different types of selection. He needs practice with vocab, and we will go over this more next time."
"During this session, we focused on topics that were going to be present on her end of course exam. Namely, we worked with solving systems of equations via substitution and factoring and finding the zeroes of a function. I noticed the student's confidence but we need to work on allowing her mind to be flexible when it comes to solving problems. I've noticed that if a problem deviates from the structure of a sample problem, she will be less confident in solving even though she has the skills necessary."
"In this session we covered some properties of sequences and series/summations, including how to simplify summations by breaking them up into multiple smaller summations and pulling out multiplicative constants. Other properties reviewed were the associative and translation invariance properties of summation notation. The student was struggling a bit with how to manipulate sequences and series, as it is new material to him. However, his intuition in many circumstances was still correct, but he simply was not confident that it was the right step to take. The student has some additional problems like this to complete for practice."
"We covered quadratic equations, radicals, imaginary numbers, etc. We did a number of practice problems and he is doing really well with the calculations. Additionally, we covered acids and bases, Lewis structure, intermolecular forces, bond angles and bond shapes for his chemistry course. We did practice problems and did some calculations for pOH, PH, [OH-] and [H3O+]. It was a pretty great lesson."
"The student has a unit test on Thursday, so he worked on his review packet for the exam. We began with rational expressions. He said this section is the toughest for him; however, after doing multiple problems, there was no major concern. He struggled slightly with factoring trinomials with expansion. I practiced a few more factoring problems, and he was able to strengthen his skills. We continued working on the next section on logs. He really likes these and they are easy for him. However when we worked on solving log expressions with trinomials, he again needed help with factoring. He is a good student, but I am continuing to push him to solve problems on his own; I don't like when he gives up and asks for help to solve the problems. I am going to continue to encourage him and give him confidence to solve problems on his own to prepare adequately for his exam."
"We went over everything that may have confused the student on her previous exam for Chapter 9 - she's able to do the problems, so I'd say that she needs some extra practice to apply the concepts so that under pressure, she is able to do just as well as she does during practice. We also went over an earlier chapter with exponents and system of equations."
