"We worked on quadratic functions today, specifically using the quadratic formula to find the roots of the equations. Some of the problems involved radical numbers, so we were able to practice simplifying those as well."
"The student worked on factoring trinomials of the form ax^2+bx+c. He is quite good when a = 1 but his solution method (doing it in his head) introduces sign errors. This is a particular problem when a does not equal one, as there are more steps and signs can get lost. He was willing to work with me on the more difficult problems, and gave his own solution process. With regards to strategy, I advised him to do all steps by hand and to confirm that all operations were done correctly. Additionally, for the times when a does not equal 1, I showed him how all intermediate steps between the starting trinomial and the factored trinomial must be equal to the starting trinomial, specifically with regard to signs."
"Today, we finished a biology worksheet due this coming Friday based on a lab done in class (dissection of a rat). We also practiced some factoring of polynomials (as a refresher from a test done today). Afterwards, we also worked on some of the science "brain teasers" I have been giving him these past few weeks, with questions focused mostly on physics and chemistry. Next week, the student will bring the study guides for the exams that will be on next Friday so we will spend the session going over the material for both biology and algebra in preparation for that test."
"Today we finished the student's review and prep for his final on Wednesday. He got every problem from every chapter done, and really understood the concepts I reviewed with him, as well as the tricks and shortcuts I taught him."
"Today I finished prepping the student for his math test. We went over solving system of equations. We also worked on the note card he's allowed to have on the test. I gave him some websites with practice problems and tutorials so he can feel prepared. He knows the material."
"The student and I worked on his final exam study guide and we were able to complete half of it. We discussed adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational expressions. I also provided my own chapter 9 and 11 study guide, as well as the answers and showed my work explaining how I got the answers. He can use this to look over if he has time before the exam."
