Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we discussed the material on chemical bonding (including polymers, monomers, covalent bonds) for organic chemistry. We also reviewed valence electrons, and the Lewis structures of atoms. We ended with reading through the chapter and going over each section together and then completing the chapter summary after we reached the end of chapter."
"We covered topics for a secondary education course that included precipitates in different kinds of reactions and reduction oxidation reactions."
"The student and I worked on her homework assignment, which covered entropy and enthalpy. We also reviewed the test that she took last week."
"We reviewed centroid, moment of inertia, parallel axis theorem, polar moment of inertia, product of inertia, etc. We reviewed how to break complex shapes into smaller sections and find out more information about how these shapes would resist rotation about some axis of rotation or torsion (twisting is resisted by polar moment of inertia). Excel (spreadsheet) is useful for organizing the numbers."
"We continued preparing for the AP exam, going over electrochemistry and nuclear chemistry. We clarified her understanding of electrochemistry and reinforced it with more practice. We then went over nuclear chemistry, over alpha, beta, and gamma decay, which she understood quickly. We reinforced this also through a free response question on this concept that also touched on half-life concepts, and she did very well. We went through a basic chem/thermo problem, which she struggled through, trying to remember the concepts learned so long ago, but she ended up getting the correct answers. We will have a final review on Saturday."
"In today's session, we completed the lecture on DNA transcription and translation and addressed all the topics that were presented in the outline. We also started reviewing old exam forms as preparation for the final exam, which is cumulative. The purpose of going over the old exam is to practice methods of approaching the wording in the answer choices, and being able to work through them and easily eliminate the incorrect answers. So far there has been a lot of improvement in the student's approach to answering of these questions. We will have another session on Friday where we will only cover past exams to review any concepts that are still unclear."
