Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Reviewed the math sections from the first practice test. Student found most of the problems difficult, so we reviewed each one. She is particularly uncomfortable with geometry, so I taught her some plane geometry and all the area formulas. Her algebra skills are much stronger, but she needs to practice the process of converting word problems into equations. She understands many of the more challenging concepts, so she can get some of the harder questions correct. The key to a higher score will be improving her accuracy on the easier questions."
"I had assigned the student a full-length practice SAT for homework, so we reviewed the errors she had made. She had the most trouble with the long passages in the critical reading sections. Her writing was very good, and she had a few issues with some math concepts, such as averages, percentages, ratios, etc. She noted that she tended to run out of time on the critical reading sections, which is why she couldn't do as well as she could have on those sections. I gave her some tips to manage her time better, and when she reviewed the passages, she did well. We did not have enough time to go over everything that she had gotten wrong, so I told her to finish reviewing her errors for homework. I also assigned a homework section out of her review book."
"Today the student and I worked on linear equations. We practiced slope-intercept for and standard form, and converting equations between the two types. We reviewed parallel and perpendicular slopes. We also covered systems of equations, focusing on solving by substitution and add/subtract. His homework is to complete three sections, one of each type in reading, writing, and math. We'll meet again next Wednesday."
