Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Reviewed the names and abbreviations associated with each element. We completed three math worksheets on geometry, order of operations, and pre-algebra."
"Today we worked on one of the student's mastering chemistry assignments. We covered molarity, moles/volume, moles/mass and completing equations with given substance masses, and % yields."
"In this session, we reviewed for the student's quiz on electrochemistry, including how to find oxidation states and interpreting redox reactions."
"We finished the practice AP Chemistry free response and moved on to a second practice free response. We covered solubility equilibrium, voltaic and electrolytic cells, gas laws and current, limiting reagent problems and calorimetry. We practiced analyzing experimental data in the calorimetry and voltaic cell questions. We were able to cover current and electrolytic cells which the student said were not covered in his AP Chemistry class, helping him feel more prepared for his exam. During this session, I tried to prompt him as little as possible so he could practice solving the questions independently as he will on the exam. His exam is on Monday. He said that he felt our sessions overall were very productive and he feels much better prepared for the exam than he did when we started three weeks ago."
"We covered galvanic cells and balancing redox reactions. He needed help with a reaction NO2 -> NO3- + NO because the same reactant is undergoing both red & oxid. Then we drew galvanic cells and labeled parts like cathode, anode, electron flow, half reaction. He seemed to get it at end."
"We talked about Lewis structures, fulfilling the octet rule (and what atoms are exceptions to that rule), formal charges, molecular geometry (based on central atom), and molecule polarity. I came prepared with a two-page worksheet to help reinforce these concepts (since they were discussed prior to the session), but the student had an extensive packet to go through covering the topic. We were able to get all but the last question done in the time allotted, and she went home with my worksheet as extra practice. We discussed ways to check the Lewis structure (octet rule) and tips to arranging atoms."
