Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I covered the opening topics on Conic Sections. Conic sections are: parabolas, circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas. We discussed the basic graphs and equations of these different curves. By the end of the session, the student was able to identify each of these four conic sections based only on the small differences in the equations."
"The student reviewed for her upcoming final by working on chapter review problems from the conics section, graphing conics, and writing equations for conics based on information or a graph given, rotated conics section, finding the angle of rotation and also applications of change of rate."
"This is the final review session before his exam. We went over a past exam (or maybe practice exam) of his on combinations and permutations. His biggest difficulty is figuring out when a question is asking for a combination or a permutation. I explained that it depends on how important the order of the given elements are and he seemed a bit more comfortable. He did well on the practice problems afterward."
"I went over how to translate word problems into algebraic expressions and then translate that into matrices to solve. She seems to do fine once she has the expressions, her issue is primarily understanding how to create the formula from the phrasing of the question. She practiced this and towards the end was doing it much more independently."
"For our last session, we reviewed the portions of trigonometry we had covered previously and talked about the inverse trig functions. We also went back to some of the previous topics and reviewed how to factor polynomials, solve a quadratic polynomial, finding vertical asymptotes of rational functions, shifting and stretching graphs, and function notation. We also looked at using a graphing calculator to find the values of the trigonometric functions or graph a function."
"We continued reviewing permutations and probability. Overall, the student seems pretty strong with this material."
