Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on logarithms in this session, dealing with properties of the logarithm, laws of the logarithm, and solving equations involving exponents and logarithms. We also briefly discussed graphs of the logarithmic and exponential functions. I drew up the problems and shared them with the student, who took a quiz on this material the day before."
"We finished going over the first pre-calculus test and started going over the second pre-calculus test. Had some trouble with two questions involving reducing trig equations - as I suspected, both involved other formulas. The first one required difference of squares formula, and the second one required secant squared formula. We'll go over those questions next session. So, apparently, the placement test will cover the use of several trig formulas and identities. The rest of the test involved working with exponents, which he is mastering."
"We went over some statistic introductions. I also introduced her to normal distribution and z values. I showed her the formula for finding z, how to use a normal distribution chart, and the empirical method. Once I showed her how to use the formula and chart, she was able to apply them effectively. We went over a homework assignment and she had little trouble with it. We then went back and reviewed graphing certain functions. She just wanted to make sure she was graphing rounding functions. We did a couple of examples to make sure she knew what she was doing. She takes a test on Friday."
"Today, the student and I mostly worked on geometric sequences and series. For the most part, the student picked this up pretty quick. Then we went on to binomial theorem, including Pascal's triangle. We didn't get too much into this; I gave him a really quick crash course on how to do binomial expansion and watched him successfully work through the first easy problem."
"The student and I met from 4:00 to 5:40 at the library. This was our initial meeting. She is bright, quick, and soft-spoken. We reviewed her current material (online). We covered sequences, series, and formulas for arithmetic sequences and series. We also discussed the various number sets (natural, whole, integers, rationals, irrationals, real, imaginary, complex) to provide background. Next session: Wed at 3:30."
"We covered a new topic: complex numbers. We began with an introduction of the formatting of a complex number and then to some basic principles that are associated with real and imaginary numbers. I covered the definition of i and provided some identities. We touched on equality, adding and subtracting and ended with multiplication of complex numbers. The student did a great job absorbing the new material presented. Next session we will cover complex conjugates and division. Well done today!"
