"Today we worked on finding the areas of variously partitioned sectors of circles. The student didn't have much trouble with the basic area questions, so I decided to give him a workout and help him think his way through doing several of the problems entirely in his head. I explained that this is an under-appreciated math skill which will dramatically improve his memory for mathematical knowledge if he is committed to the practice (and patient with himself). He performed quite well on the more complicated shaded regions questions (writing things down again). I provided him with only a few clues, and he was able to see his own way to most of the answers from there. In fact, he solved one problem in a way in which I did not initially notice it could be solved (and it explained the form of my own answer in an interesting way). I, of course, shared this insight with him. He is catching on quite well to all of the information I give him. In my opinion, given his level of understanding, he listens very well in general. If he stays similarly committed and attentive, and continues to push himself as he has been, I expect his fundamentals in all things to improve dramatically. As long as he maintains concentration and practices regularly, I expect him to excel in Geometry in the near future."
"We discussed the student's homework about right triangles. He answered almost 3/4 of the homework. Though he was able to follow, he needs to familiarize himself more on the equations and concepts."
"Today we covered more problems in circles, arc length, and segments. He has a test tomorrow and is now ready to take it."
"For this session, the student and I worked through two chapters that will be covered on her quiz on Monday. The chapters both dealt with circles, and I made sure she understood each concept. We also worked through several practice questions that were in a form that will likely show up on the quiz."
"During this session, volume of cones, cylinders, and pyramids were reviewed, and the student completed homework on these concepts. Additionally, some chemistry homework was reviewed on the topic of gas laws."
"We are working on geometric problems that involve a lot of algebra. They are difficult questions to conceive. Once the student was able to notice the patterns and relationships between secants and tangents, he started getting the hang of it. Some algebra skills are a little rusty (quadratics), but we're dusting off the cobwebs and applying them properly. A little more practice and he should be in good shape."
