Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session, so I wanted to get to know the student a bit. We then played a sight word matching game. I would like to continue to strengthen his knowledge of sight words - through games and other forms of practice. I conducted a brief assessment of some basic math concepts and skills - we will be able to work on some basic addition and subtraction skills/strategies, place value, and word problems. He did well with recognizing patterns and sequencing numbers. He used picture cues to aid in his comprehension of a story that was read aloud to him. He loves to draw and has a wonderful imagination that can be used to pair his drawings with print. I left his first story with him and asked him to read it to his mom a couple of times over the course of this next week. This will strengthen his fluency and sight word recognition."
"We continued Harry Potter and discussed the theme of "wanting to be the same as everyone else." The student also wrote down new vocabulary words we encountered, and we discussed their meaning. We concluded with a second story and discussed the theme of "possessiveness.""
"The student is doing a great job working with money. She really enjoys counting out different amounts, and we practiced making change and combinations of coins. We continued to read our chapter book and answer comprehension questions concerning setting, predictions, character outlines, etc."
"On Monday, I met with the student for the first time. During the session, I went over some math and English concepts at the very beginning. I wanted to see how much she knew in each subject. I then went ahead and evaluated her math and English skills with a few exercises of my own. She seems to be doing well in math. However, she seems to have a harder time in English. She struggles the most with reading and writing, and this is where we will focus in our first few sessions. The student was motivated during the whole session and seems to be excited about reaching her goals. I look forward to helping her meet her goals."
"We worked on the student's reading comprehension. We worked out a new plan to help him focus more on reading. He needs to feel more confident in his reading abilities, and we've found a way to do that!"
"We started the session with phonics reviews. We used word lists that have a variety of vowel combinations as well as blends and digraphs. The student did quite well. He also went through a list of contractions and identified the two words that create the contraction as well as the correct spelling using an apostrophe. Finally, we read a nonfiction selection and answered a variety of questions related to main idea, sequencing, and identifying details. The student is a very hard worker and responds well to suggestions I present."
