Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began by discussing the student's goals, learning style, struggles, etc. to help establish a game plan for our sessions. We determined that the sessions should be devoted to Math work specifically because she feels confident about Verbal and Writing. I directed her to various tools for studying vocabulary. We went through tips and strategies for Verbal and Writing briefly and then did a lesson on percents."
"Since tonight was our first session, we discussed her previous work in preparing for the GRE, as well as her goals for the test. She hopes to take it in mid-July, and has taken two practice tests. She feels like she needs to work on all aspects of the test, but seemed especially unsure of herself with Analytical Writing. We developed a weekly study plan for her, to ensure that she incorporates time for GRE prep each day. Then, we reviewed strategies for text completion and sentence equivalence questions. We followed the review with a practice set. We also covered strategies for Analytical Writing. She practiced making outlines for both the issue and the argument sections. Over the next week, she will review her previous practice tests and pick out questions, take another full-length practice test, make vocab flashcards, and review math strategies from a test prep book."
"We focused primarily on writing the essays. For now, student should focus on writing without worrying about time limits. The goal is to become familiar with the writing process such that it is no longer intimidating. Each essay can be written as list of bullet points, and the points then removed. 1. Summary "Some people say.." 2. "In the real world, however"... 3. There are benefits to the statement, such as... 4. However, (problems with the statement) 5. Balancing statement; Paragraph 1: As one example...etc."
"The student did much better on his most recent practice test. We worked on knowing when to use the "picking numbers" strategy first. We also did other practice questions together."
"After covering our homework from the previous session, we spent the entire day working on probability and counting methods. We discussed the definitions and applications of counting methods, permutations, combinations, factorials, and basic probability, with mutually exclusive and independent events."
"The student and I dove further into general chemistry today, covering gases, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics and electrochemistry. For each subject, we worked through many discrete and passage-based questions to test the student's understanding. Her knowledge and preparation was very strong for most of these topics; however, several of the tougher questions did give opportunities to clear up any misunderstandings and solidify what she already knew. We finished the session by working out a more detailed day-by-day schedule for the student to follow over these last few weeks before her exam. We will meet in several days to review the student's attempt at a practice test this weekend."
