Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I focused on the math section of the ACT. We talked about strategies to work through problems faster and also strategies on setting up geometry problems. We started to work on strategies for the science section and will continue with that on Monday."
"Tonight we covered momentum, impulse, the law of conservation of momentum, and types of collisions (elastic v. inelastic). We spent some time with prior homework and worked through her test review for her test over momentum and impulse. The student worked very hard tonight. She showed mastery of the content when we worked through the test review."
"The student and I continued covering Logarithms. She felt much better about evaluating logarithms. We then worked on using the logarithmic properties (product, quotient, and power properties), changing the base of logarithms, evaluating logarithms using the characteristic properties, and applications of logarithms."
"The student was able to finish one practice exam which we were able to score (1710, with reading being his highest and math being his lowest score). He was able to finish 4 more sections of the following exam which we then reviewed. He is definitely very solid in the reading comprehension section. He is showing great improvement in the sentence completion section too. With math, it appears that his biggest problem is not being able to finish the exam and just remembering which concepts to use when. Geometry and logic problems seem to be the questions he needs the most work on in the math section. Overall, I am impressed that he is able to steadily study and complete the several passages/exams assigned. "
"The student and I covered good ways to prepare for his practice exam. We focused on vocabulary and quantitative skills. I recommended he read more for pleasure in order to increase his vocabulary, and we went over the words covered in the practice tests in his textbook. We covered how to set up an equation from a word problem in order to solve for the desired variable in the quantitative test section. We covered some basic geometry problems that might arise on the test, as they were included in the practice test. "
"During our session, the student and I began by establishing a schedule for him to review for his upcoming biology test. This involved first establishing the specific methods by which he would review, and then determining what methods he would use each day, and how long he would use each method. In order for me to be able to keep track of his progress, we decided to make a calendar where he could essentially check off that he had completed the study activities we had agreed upon. The remainder of the session was spent reviewing materials likely to appear on his test. On Thursday, I plan to give him a practice test to ensure he is on track."
"We covered notes for chemistry lessons 2.06, 2.07, and 2.08. The student took a quiz that covered these three sections. Lessons included calculating molarity, mole fractions, and percent solutions."
"The student and I met to go over her math practice test sections. After her last full test where she did extremely well on reading. I had assigned another blue book exam for her to complete. She did far better on this exam with results that were over 100 points better. When the student takes time to write out her work and read the problems carefully, she does quite well. One thing I continue to urge her to do is not to give up too easily on early problems but not to spend too much time on later ones. It is a difficult balance to achieve, but she is making progress at scanning ahead for problems that she knows how to do once she has gotten through the first ten which I have told her I want her to definitely do. "
"I am so proud of the accomplishments that the student has made. She has gradually improved from week to week, and I couldn't ask for any better. I have encouraged her to continue reading and logging the hours that she spends reading over the summer to ensure that she doesn't fall behind over such a long break. I have also given her the tools to help her comprehend as she reads. I wish her the best of luck, and I will greatly miss working for them!"
"We did just a few logical reasoning problems today. We then discussed how she should approach deciding whether to take the exam again. If she scores above 160, which she has been consistently, then she's decided she will not re-take the exam. She's worked hard and is ready for the exam. We also went over some approaches to take while applying to law schools in the Fall."
"Continued with trig identities and radian conversions. Student has a little trouble understanding the language, but was able to work through the problems given to her with little assistance. Left her with some practice problems to do on her own."
"The student thinks she aced her physics exam, which is great news. We then started prepping for her final on Monday. We've got a lot to cover, and I needed some time to review some of the stuff on my own."
