Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we went through some of the science passages together, talking carefully about how to scan the graphs in order to absorb all relevant information. In addition, we talked about grammar, and reviewed the rules for commas."
"The student had specific questions for problems that she was not certain of how to solve. While going over these problems I was able to show her the methodology and reasons behind the solution to the problems. She grasped the concepts quickly and was grateful for the "aha" moments she experienced. Working with her is excellent because as hard as I try to teach she makes the same effort to learn. There was reciprocity in regards to a desire to succeed in this endeavor."
"We went over SAT writing multiple choice sections and essay. The student did quite well on the multiple choice section. Her errors were in the identifying sentences portion. I told her to watch for misused prepositions, but the rest of the questions were relatively easy fixes."
"We reviewed the critical reading and writing sections. The student should study vocabulary flash cards to improve her score in the sentence completions. Her greatest strength is grammar, so she did very well on the sentence revisions and error identifications."
"The student and I focused today on setting her up with a practice schedule and with going over her ACT materials provided to her by her school (she takes an ACT course offered at her high school on Mondays and Thursdays). We went over math problems she struggled with today. I assigned her a practice exam from her ACT prep book (to be taken in full and proctored by her mother), as well as 10 questions/day from the math and science sections in her other prep book."
"We covered another practice test. The student's math scores are currently in the 660-730 range, and his reading and writing are improving as well (I don't have exact scores as he has not done the reading comp to completion yet). For next time we will focus on the longer reading passages."
"We worked on practice questions for the ACT. I have access to a series of quizzes from my job. Today, we focused on the English portion of the ACT for the first half, then a mix of math and science for the second half. The student did well on English, not displaying any particular weaknesses except for questions regarding the main idea of passages. We did a little bit of science too, and those went very well. I ran out of science quizzes, so I showed her the ones on the website. She found them useful and said she'd try them on her own. The math questions went well, and she only missed one out of the approximately 20 practice Math questions that we did."
"The student and I went over the work she did for this session. She has started timing herself and stopping when the time is up, so we can accurately calculate her score. She did an essay, two math sections, a writing section, a CR section, and some vocab. Overall, she did pretty well on the timing. She was able to finish the CR and writing sections within the allotted time, and only had 2 questions left on one math section and 1 question left on the other. In terms of scores, she also has been doing decently - I have been keeping track and will calculate them when she is finished. At this point, we are just going over small details and focusing mostly on strategy and test-taking skills. She has April vacation coming up soon and will be doing a lot of practice tests during that time."
"We finished reviewing numbers and operations. We discussed common grammatical mistakes in a sentence. We talked how to effectively use remaining time to prepare for June's test. We are bit behind because of missed sessions, but with increased effort, I'm hopeful we can achieve our goal."
"We went over general test taking strategies as well as the breakdown of the test. This included the layout of each section in terms of number of questions, time per question, types of questions/passages, etc. The student was very responsive and attentive to all of the material we went over. I left her with a practice ACT test to take before our next meeting. We went over the English section in great detail and took two different short practice passages. She did very well on the English section and followed my suggestions and instructions. We then went over the Reading section. I gave her strategies for saving time on this rather arduous section. We will work on it more at our next meeting. We talked about "engaging your test": marking and enumerating which problems were difficult or uncomfortable as well as parts of the question which are of particular importance."
"Yesterday, the student and I reviewed Mathematics and Science Diagnostics that she has taken since we spent a full day on each subject. Her science score was a 35, which is a significant improvement from her initial diagnostic."
"Today, we went over a math problem set the student worked on during the week. Some of the core concepts we discussed were percents/ratios, calculating area/volume, and simplifying equations. We spent some time doing sample problems, particularly going over how to isolate the variable and solve. The student was very proactive about practicing problems during the week and came prepared to the session."
