Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I went over his homework; he was covering a new concept-Graphing inequalities. We worked on solving and graphing the inequalities and also looked ahead to solving a linear system by graphing."
"We went over trigonometry problems involving bearing and distance traveled, which relied on the law of cosines; area problems, which relied on law of sines; and graphing trig functions. The student is very smart and did not have any trouble solving the problems after I showed her how to do them."
"The student is working on graphing multiple inequalities simultaneously. He had a pretty good grasp of this, especially when I showed him the simple trick of testing a point. This work led into "linear programming", which is using the common areas of multiple constraining inequalities to find the maximum or minimum value of a target equation. He did very well when all the pieces are laid out clearly. We worked on breaking the word problems down into the equation and formats that he is more familiar with."
"Today was a first session with the student. He is performing low or failing most of his classes. He did better generally in 8th grade, but is struggling with a high school course load. Math has always been a difficult subject for him. We began with the current unit and functions. We reviewed the important concepts: def. of a function, types of functions, basic shapes of functions, slope, intercepts, domain/ranges. He needs the concepts to be explained in simple direct language. He is working diligently on the fundamentals. The student's attitude is very good and he was able to explain the basic concepts in his own words. I made a review sheet of the concepts we covered to model good note taking and organization. We will meet twice weekly Mon/Thurs going forward."
"We went over how to use compound interest formula and reviewed using exponential growth vs. decay formulas. We completed review so he could complete his homework assignment where he was comfortable using the formulas. After explaining the concept, he was fairly comfortable using it. He will be receiving a review tomorrow and so we will be able to review for his test."
"We went over ratios, data and statistical analysis, and probability for the exam. The student is already showing good problem-solving skills (i.e. reading problem carefully, coming up with alternative methods, etc.)"
