"I selected a programming challenge for him to complete during the first half of the session that would require him to think carefully about indices. The challenge required him, given an integer n, to fill an array of length n*n with a particular pattern of zeroes or natural numbers depending on the position within the array. It was a formidable challenge, but the student was able to break it down into pieces, put his ideas into code, write out test cases to see if his ideas worked, and then modify the code where appropriate. While I did give him a few minor hints to guide him in the right direction, he came up with an algorithm that worked for all integers n (that was slightly different from the one I had come up with before coming to the session!), and, even more impressively, did so without running the code at all until he was sure it would work, thus cutting out the trial-and-error guesswork that he so often used. I was very pleased that he'd managed to tackle a difficult problem like this. With the remaining time, I had him complete some multiple-choice questions over arrays, ArrayLists, and classes, most of which he had little difficulty completing."
"I began by having the girls make complete presentations on their own in PowerPoint (the theme: What I want to be when I grow up-why I like it and what it is). They have quickly mastered skills with which they had quite a few problems initially. Likewise, I am noting immediate improvement in their comfort with general navigation on the computer. We then began working in Excel. Next session, they will be using Excel to make a Christmas wish list for me."
"I walked the student through setting up an online retail store account and searching Google for photographs. I also helped disconnect and store his iMac so that his super could install a new computer desk."
