Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we continued working with exponents and simplifying expressions where following exponent rules were necessary. The student did not have a new math assignment, so we worked practice problems. She had a positive attitude during the session and was able to successfully work most of the problems on her own. I did have to assist her a bit with some problems, reminding her to follow her order of operations and positive/negative rules for integers. I do feel that she has gotten stronger with this concept than on Monday and will master it soon with more practice."
"Met with the student and discussed various algebra topics to review what he has covered so far this semester. Topics covered included solving systems of equations and understanding how to work with exponents."
"The student was unclear about the new material that was introduced to him in class, so we worked through some of these problems. We covered identifying vertices and intercepts of quadratic functions in vertex form, factored form, and quadratic form as well as maneuvering between the three forms. After going through a few problems together, the student was able to complete the rest of his homework without much instruction and with greater speed. He also had homework involving factoring, but he whizzed through that section without much trouble! He has a quiz on factoring later this week, which he feels prepared for, and another quiz next week on the new material. We will have another meeting before the second quiz, so we will have more time to practice these concepts before he is assessed on them."
"Today we started on Chapter 9: discriminant, quadratic equation, and radicals. The student learned part of the discriminant in class, I explained how to derive the numbers that are plugged in and showed him how to use the quadratic equation. Hey picked it up quickly and was already solving the problems correctly. He also picked up simplifying radicals faster than any of my other students, considering he's never seen them before. I was happy to see that math didn't make him miserable today and look forward to covering the axis of symmetry and vertex form when we meet on Monday."
"We worked on solving systems of equations by elimination. We also reviewed solving systems of equations by substitution briefly. The student will work on both sets of problems before next time. Towards the end, he worked out a few problems mostly by himself."
"To help the student prepare for her final, we worked through a variety of problems beginning with her toughest area. Once it seemed that she was mastering that topic, I asked her to demonstrate her understanding by creating a problem for me that she also had to be able to work out."
