Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked through a brief overview of trigonometric identities (sum/difference, double, half angle) and inverse trig functions-both how to solve for unknown side ratios and how to use them in proofs. She was having a bit of difficulty determining how to set up the sum difference problems. I showed her a couple of example problems and gave her tips for keeping track of the signs of the final answer. She also had some difficulty simplifying complex fractions without the use of a calculator. I reminded her of techniques of simplification and order of operations. She did much better on the second set of problems we worked through."
"We reviewed the properties of a kite. After the review, the student was able to complete her homework very quickly. We then spent most of our time on 2 column proofs because this is an area she had questions about. We went through a proof that came up on a previous quiz that she did not understand, and then we went through another proof that was in her textbook together. I gave her 2 main strategies to use: 1) Start from the end to figure out what exactly it is that you need to show (do you need to show that 2 angles are congruent? 2 sides are proportional? 2 sides are congruent? etc.) and 2) write down everything you can figure out from the given condition."
"We spent tonight's session working on geometry and preparing for both an upcoming exam and the student's midterm. After going through all of the material, he felt extremely good about his knowledge on the subject. We are expecting great results on his exam."
"Today the student had been assigned some rather difficult circle property homework. Some of the homework was straight-forward in that tangents, secants, and cords closely followed math reference sheet formulas. Much more difficult problems involved practical applications involving bridge spans, rainbow arcs, and finding the radius of a circle inscribed in a 5-12-13 right triangle. She managed to complete it all with some guidance from me."
"We continued to refresh on topics that will be covered on her upcoming tests. I found that she had some trouble with the algebra behind special right triangles (radicals and simplification), so we went over that. We then practiced trig word problems. I will be making a formula and theorem sheet for her to review before her test on Monday! She understands all concepts, but any sort of algebra practice helps, even geometry based problems."
"Today we worked on area and perimeter of polygons and composite plane shapes. The student did really well with this. We also reviewed some of the quadrilateral geometry theorems and definitions and she seems to be doing better with these as well."
