Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We read books for fluency and comprehension. We practiced sight words for speed and accuracy. We worked on recognizing short and long vowel sounds."
"In today's session, we focused on reading/decoding words and comprehension. The student read the book "Space Cat" out loud. He did very well, only getting stuck on the most difficult words like "strange" and "creatures." We talked about the meaning of some of the words, and Henry answered comprehension questions about the story verbally (ex. What did Space Cat need? Is the king going to help him? What do the machines do? etc.) He answered all of the questions very well. Next, we completed a worksheet that matched words to their opposites, which he did easily. The student then read aloud another story, "Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type," again, only struggling with the most difficult words. He was also able to retell what happened in the story verbally, after we read it. We finished the lesson going through sight word flash cards. He was able to get all 108 words correct, only hesitating on two of them. The student did very well during today's lesson."
"This was our first tutoring session so we spent a good deal of time getting the student comfortable with me and the idea of tutoring help with her reading. She was in tears when I meet her about the idea of having a tutor. She warned up through the session and was smiling and reading by the end of the session. I would have liked to get a better idea about her reading levels and needs, but much of our time was getting her to feel comfortable and trying to figure out what type of material that she would like to read. I brought a variety of different material at different levels to assess the student, but she was not interested in the material. We selected something in the begging readers section of the library but the reading level was to high. We will meet again to try again to assess her reading level and select more appropriate material to develop and improve her reading skills. The student will also benefit from some work on her sight words and phonics, which we will also address. Her mother stayed with us during the initial session."
