Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We completed the student's chapter book today and wrapped up Characters, Setting, Key Events in his reading journal that occurred in each chapter. We prefaced the reading by looking at the pictures and the student made a prediction for how the story would end. We took turns reading. Part of his reading comprehension packet includes vocabulary. Usually we look up the words in advance but today he figured out the meaning of the 5 words by reading the sentence and used context clues. I feel like the approach we are using has helped the student review and keep the details of each chapter fresh in his memory and he made numerous text to text and text to self connections. He did a progressively better job of making connections and building on the story line. I'm looking forward to his next book to see how he takes ownership."
"During this session, the student and I focused on strengthening his reading comprehension skills through an exercise found online. Together, we read a selected passage from the site. I introduced him to annotating a text and had him underline main ideas and keywords in the passage. The exercise then challenged him to identify the main idea or argument of the passage along with the supporting details. He then had to put the main idea and supporting details in his own words. He struggled to find the main idea of the passage on his own, but with some of my prompting and suggestions, he was on his way. Once he had a clear understanding of the passage's main idea, it was easier for him to identify the supporting details. He summarized the passage's main idea and supporting details in his own words. He is an intelligent fourth grader; he just needs more practice reading and writing! In order to get him excited about reading and improve his reading comprehension skills, we spent the end of the session selecting a book which we will read together and have discussions over every week. He ended up selecting War Horse as his novel of choice. For our next meeting, he is to give an oral summary of the first two chapters. In the future, we are also going to start preparing for the writing portion of the state assessment exam."
