Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's teacher gave him several lengthy assignments today over sequences and series, which we began tackling this evening. We worked on convergence and divergence of sequences and geometric series, and we began converting rational expressions into geometric power series. He seemed unfamiliar with all of the material at first, but my explanations and our practice took hold quickly."
"The student has a test tomorrow so we spent our session today getting her ready for that. That meant an all purpose review of arc length, area under the curve and volume of various solids shown through polar or Cartesian functions. It seems that she was taught to memorize various formulas for various solids without understanding the components. As such, she had not been taught that the dx in an integral represents the width of the integrants, and that what is being integrated is slices of the whole. Once we got that worked out and clarified, everything else fell into place and by the end of the two hours she was going straight from the question to the integral, it was wonderful."
"We continued working on problems relating to taking the second derivative of functions. I related how these problems are especially applicable to motion problems in physics where the velocity equation is the derivative of motion, and the acceleration equation is the derivative of velocity. I also went over conceptual models relating a function to its derivatives and showed how the different properties such as slope, local extrema and concavity are described by the derivatives."
"We covered visual models for multiplying fractions, proportions, math terminology, and reading math problems carefully. He cares very much about his grades and respects his teachers. He sees the value of this material and is eager to learn as well. Going forward, we will continue to work with visuals, the smart pen, and technology to teach math strategies and we will use KWL charts to further clarify word problems. His attitude is an all-around win!"
"This session focused on linear functions, slopes, and solving quadratic equations. The student seems to be progressing very well. Given the student's aptitude we will be focusing on ensuring a firm understanding of the current chapter materials as well as beginning to work on later sections. He was advised to review at least one section ahead before our next session and we would then decide the rate of study of the current and future material."
"The student and I looked at a worksheet over vectors he had missed points on and then discussed more ideas for his internal assessment."
