Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I went over: decorating text using cuss, displaying images as backgrounds, positioning background images, repeating background images (also went over sprites and how they relate to cuss backgrounds), changing the display of elements from block to inline and vice versa, and html elements and how they relate to cuss commands such as underline, strikethrough, and overline. We also went over positioning and how to position cuss elements in multiple ways such as relative to their container, relative to the entire page, or fixed on the entire page so it cannot be moved at all. Finally, we went over some resources and also went over some practice situations of when to use certain cuss commands and when to avoid them. She is doing a wonderful job soaking all this information in. Her homework code has been very clean and neat just like we practiced and she seems to be understanding all the information at a very good rate."
"We talked a lot about pointers today and went over more linked list work. The student had a specific assignment that she was able to work on, which was very useful. We also talked a bit more about big O notation and some post-fix calculations. Next week, we will be prepping for his midterm exam and reviewing all his material from the past month."
"During this session, the student began working on his latest problem set. We relatively easily progressed through the BTree code needed for spatial partitioning. We still have some work to do on the actual graphics component of the program. He understood the BTree content much better than he did the last time he was in this class."
"We covered concerns he had with his group project. Their project is about group organization and working together. I gave him tools to discuss things with project lead. The main concern is to talk to the group without introducing negative points. Do not point out mistakes or shortcomings unless you have a solution. Anyone can identify a problem; it is the solution that is hard to come by. After this lengthy discussion we went back to one of his other classes."
"We went over some MS SQL questions. We stepped through creating a database, inserting data (both by hand and with a SQL statement), deleted a row from a table, wrote a simple select, join select (inner join), and a simple union statement. The student has a terrific attitude and is anxious to learn everything."
"We went over the kilocalculator code using swing as well as IntelliJ form. We also fixed several errors in Java. Then, we started discussing the MySQL database and how to connect using XAMPP. We will continue our discussion later today. He was motivated and eager to complete the final exam review."
