Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we covered geometry homework and most of the exercises that will be testing geometry knowledge on the upcoming exam. Topics included right triangles, finding missing quantities in triangles, and right-angled kites. Student's attitude is very upbeat, she is confident in her growing knowledge of geometry. Student has good command of principles of geometry, such as looking for similar triangles in various problems. Student has good command of coordinate geometry (rectangular coordinates). Student has found a peculiar property/a pattern of multiple Pythagorean triplets and was encouraged to investigate its prevalence further and perhaps find other patterns. We left some less complicated exercises for her homework. We have also gone over a part of her science/biology assignment. That part was about homologous extremities in various mammals."
"The student and I worked through a brief overview of trigonometric identities (sum/difference, double, half angle) and inverse trig functions - both how to solve for unknown side ratios and how to use them in proofs. She was having the most difficulty determining how to set up the sum difference problems. I showed her a couple example problems and gave her tips for keeping track of the signs of the final answer. She also had some difficulty simplifying complex fractions without the use of a calculator. I reminded her techniques of simplification and order of operations. She did much better on the second set of problems we worked through."
"This session's work was focused on word problems applying the surface area and volume formulas for prisms and cylinders. He retained a lot from our work last week, and this session went smoothly because of it."
"This week, the student prepared for his test, which will be given next Wednesday. He was prepared with all of the topics that he will be tested on, but had questions on how to study and best prepare for the test itself. I explained that he should make sure he knows the concepts and how to apply them, and showed him how all the questions on his homework all ask the same question several different ways. We practiced more Pythagorean's Theorem as well as solving for the sides of a 45-45-90 triangle and a 30-60-90 triangle. He does very well with applying things that are given to him, so today I spent some time making sure he understood the why behind how all of the formulas worked. I believe he works even better when he understands how things work."
"During the tutoring session we reviewed the student's homework covering the law of sines and law of cosines. He understood the material quite well, and he knew how to set up and complete each of the homework problems."
"The student and I's session went very well. We went over a variety of topics, including proportions, proofs, and diagrams to help prepare for his upcoming test. I believe he is making steady progress and I look forward to our next session."
