Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session we focused on the product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule for derivatives. After a bit of practice the student is coming along well on this material, since it was used extensively in his class last semester. We also spent some time looking at how we can use algebra to change the form of a problem and allow us to use different methods to arrive at a solution."
"Student has begun the integration-by-parts portion of calculus. This is a difficult concept and relies heavily on experience to develop a good eye to make the best u-substitutions. So, together we covered a number of integration problems of increasing level of difficulty. I allowed her to choose her own substitutions and then discussed with her my own approach and why."
"We started to go over the student's practice test for her test on Friday. We are meeting again tomorrow to finish the practice problems. If we have time, I would also like to have her practice similar problems that I give her with different numbers to ensure that she is ready for her exam."
"Today we began reviewing for an upcoming test. We reviewed Chapter 3 and looked at testing techniques, such as how to attack the problems. Toward the end, we previewed Chapter 4 material in anticipation of the student completing the 4.1 and 4.2 homework assignments this week. She will complete these homework assignments and continue reviewing this week. She will also bring specific questions about homework problems or content areas next week. As always, she had a positive attitude, despite the complexity of the ideas. The student caught on quickly and performed well on practice problems also."
"The student had a worksheet on the chain rule that also incorporated some review on previous rules for derivatives. She was unsure about some of the more involved problems, but was able to get through them with a little guidance. We went over the last section of the chapter which introduced derivatives of exponentials and logs. I then had her do a few problems from that section so she can get a head start when school starts back up."
"The student and I covered her last quiz. We reviewed simple and more complex integrals without using u sub. We then continued working on diff eq. Specifically, IVP and half lives. We then drew slope fields, solved sep eq, and linearization problems."
