Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student had to answer questions on the 19th century relationship between Great Britain and China. The main portion involved the opium wars and the boxer rebellion, but the extra credit options we covered filled in the rest of the history of unequal treaties, spheres of influence, the Taiping Rebellion and extraterritoriality. I compared the history to the things we learned about Africa and what he will learn about India."
"We went over the test the student just finished in World History. She is able to re-take part of the test, so we are focusing on what she needs to do for that part."
"The student needed my help with a project/writing assignment for his class. The assignment was to interview different people about a topic of his choice - in this case, Imperial China. The student had written his own interview questions asking my opinion on a few different topics concerning Imperial China and I answered. I offered to help with the review of his paper, but it will not be finished in time for me to review it before it is due."
"The student worked on his review sheet for his contemporary history exam. He identified and explained the terms he knew. We looked up the terms he did not know. We also discussed previous exams and possible test questions."
"In order to help her prepare for the student's final exam in Classics, the parent sent me the essay prompt for a component of her final that she can prepare at home. I condensed the essay prompt so that the grading criteria as well as the components necessary to satisfactorily answer the questions are all clear. I provided three sample responses of my own, which I broke into the format of the exam. I tried to provide three diverse responses (rather than one exhaustive response) in order to help the student brainstorm. I highlighted my main ideas, my supporting evidence, and my comparison between ancient Rome and modern America. I hope that my sample answers will help her think of her own topics and what kind of evidence she can use on the exam, and how to do so."
"Yesterday in tutoring, the student and I worked on a cladogram worksheet and began to review chapter 17 of her book, which involves classification and the Linnaean system. Her attitude remained positive up until the end. The skill that I included in the session was organization, because we started new notes with the new chapter."
