Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session with the student, we spent most of our time analyzing how to improve his test-taking strategy and confidence. We did spend a little bit of time going over the new chapter, which covers the surface area and volume of prisms, spheres, and other 3D shapes. However, since this is all review for him, we spent most of our time on test-taking strategy. We worked on brainstorming ways to help him relax during tests and reduce stress levels that are likely the cause of his anxious performance. Overall, I am focusing most on reassuring him that he has the capacity to succeed, and he just needs to realize that."
"We covered factoring by splitting the middle, as well as the geometry of circles and theorems governing them."
"We discussed gas laws: Charles' Law, Boyle's Law, Gay-Lussac's Law, and the combined gas law and did several examples of each. We also discussed STP and the different ways to convert pressure (atm, torr, kPa)."
"During this session, we continued to work through a problem set packet for the student's final exam. We covered problems on finding lateral area, surface area, and volume of 3D shapes. We also worked through problems on similar triangles. The student did very well with the problems on similar triangles. He was also able to easily use formulas to calculate the areas and volumes of shapes, but had some difficulty conceptualizing how the formulas were derived. We worked out some of the problems conceptually without looking up the specific formulas for the shapes, and he improved with his understanding of the processes."
"We focused mainly on homework problems and then worked a little on new material. He seemed much more on top of things this week, almost to the point where I had to slow him down a bit."
"The student and I studied regular polygon area and perimeter, from section 11.6. His next test is in approximately one week. We may schedule a meeting for the middle of next week."
