How can a tutor help your child master the ASPIRE?
Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we identified and corrected the areas where the student needed to improve. Overall her sessions went very well and she was a pleasure to work with."
"What a wonderful student and young man the student is! He brought his practice English test in which he got an A+ on! He did a practice Reading test, which we reviewed and scored. He wanted to practice his math one more time, so we practiced and reviewed that as well."
"I had asked the student to complete a few writing tests and we reviewed these together. We went over some strategies for planning and writing the essay, as well as tips that typically boost scores (active vs. passive voice, strong transitions, and using the counterargument to strengthen her position). We also reviewed some of the concepts covered by the English test and she completed some English practice exercises. To wrap up our final session before the test, we went over some basic strategies for handling problems on test day and how to avoid panicking during the test. I think she has worked really hard and will be going into the test well prepared. She would like to score somewhere from 28-30 on her first attempt, and plans to try for a higher score in June."
"The student and I began by going over the Writing assignment today. She shows strong command of organization, reasoning, and providing details/examples. We moved on to work through the English Section from Practice Test 3 together, tackling each question one by one. This provided her with some slower practice and the chance to see where she might make a simple error by going too fast or not reading through all of the answer choices. We then studied one passage out of a practice book she had used previously. Her homework is to finish the English section out of the practice book, which we will go over next time before moving onto a Math section."
"This was my initial online SAT tutoring session with the three students. We began by discussing how each of them felt about each SAT section and they sent me their SAT scores prior to the session. We discussed the essay, the math section, and some sentence completion and short passage techniques. We did practice problems on the math section and the sentence completion."
"The student's assigned practice ACT Reading and Science sections went well. After reviewing those tests, I had him do an abridged ACT under a strict time limit today. He showed significant improvements in pacing, score, and attitude on the latter two sections. We concluded our time together with a review of his test-readiness procedure for tonight, and I suggested he do one more abridged ACT on his own."
"Today, we reviewed a math test in great detail, as well as the majority of an English test. On the math portion, I was showing misspellings how to bubble in appropriately, solve problems using logic, rates, ratios, and lists. She is quite skilled at interpreting data from charts and graphs so that was not a concern. The only thing I want to work on though is time. Regarding English, she did quite well when selecting which phrases were erroneous or if the passage was correct. She states she needs more practice on reading passages and then interpreting them (critical reading) so that is what she will be working on with me next time we meet."
"Today, we spent the majority of the session reviewing sections she had completed. She had the most trouble with critical reading and math. We followed that by having a lesson on writing. We reviewed many concepts such as pronouns, verb/subject agreement, parallel structure, etc. She seemed to be more confident on these topics after the session. I had her do some practice sentences to reinforce what I was teaching as we went through the material."
"The student and I had our last session before the ACT exam he will take this weekend. We specifically focused on math, science, and writing since those where the sections he score lowest on during his last examination. I could see an increase in his ability to perform many different math questions. Also, he has improved his technique in analyzing science section questions. I feel that he is very prepared to take the ACT on Saturday."
"The student hadn't had her Math test yet, so we worked on a review. She did great! I demonstrated how to eliminate answers right from the start and shortcuts for completing the problems."
"Today was our last ACT session, so we worked through a few more tough math problems, after which I taught the student some rudimentary information about the unit circle, which we then applied to some problems he'd been unable to do. Then we finished the session by creating the remainder of the flash cards we needed from our notes. I encouraged him to review the cards before the test tomorrow."
"The student wanted help with critical reading in her two book sections, so we focused on that today. We started the sentence completions on page 232 and did a timed critical reading section. We spent a lot of time going over her math and reading homework, and I asked her to complete two pages of problems for next time."
