How can a tutor assist you in conquering GRE?

Getting into grad school is tough, and your performance on the GRE could be a deciding factor in admissions decisions. Are you worried that you'll never be able to learn every vocabulary word or remember every formula? Perhaps you're frustrated because you really do know those words and formulas, but you can't seem to improve your score. That's okay! Varsity Tutors can introduce you to GRE tutors in Atlanta that can help. They'll not only teach you the material, but will also teach you the tips and tricks you need to be successful on the test.

Strategy is an important part of standardized tests. With GRE tutoring, you'll soon see that the test is far less daunting than it may initially seem. When you know how it works, the other pieces fall in place. The tutors can work with you one-on-one right up to test day. Learn how to guess effectively when you've narrowed your answer choices down. Learn how to guess (with a very different strategy) when you can't narrow those answer choices down. Your approach to the test should be specific to your strengths and weaknesses, which is why GRE tutors work with you individually, and not with a group or one-size-fits-all approach.

The GRE covers the skills deemed important for success at the graduate level. Verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing are the four major concentrations of the test. The verbal section measures reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary usage. The verbal portion of the test is scored on a scale of 130-170. It consists of approximately 20 questions that must be completed in 30 minutes. Additionally, the verbal sections include six text completion, four sentence equivalence, and 10 critical reading questions.

The quantitative portion of the GRE assesses mathematical knowledge and reasoning skills at a basic high school level. Akin to the verbal section, the scale of the quantitative segment is 130-170. There will also be 20 questions on this portion of the exam. However, the time to complete this segment is 35 minutes. Each section is comprised of eight quantitative comparisons, nine problem solving items, and three data interpretation questions. There are a total of two quantitative sections.

The final section of the GRE consists of analytical writing. Similar to the verbal and quantitative segments, the analytical writing portion includes two writing tasks, which are an issue task and an argument task. This portion of the test will be graded on a scale of 0-6, involving half-point increments. The essays are written using a word processing program designed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). At minimum, two readers will be assigned to score the essays. The allotted time for each essay is 30 minutes. The topic for the issue task will be selected from a pool of questions. The pool of questions is available on the ETS website. The argument task involves writing a critique essay against the included argument. For example, test-takers may be asked to improve the logic of the given argument.

The GRE underwent several changes in 2011 and more changes have been announced for the future. This is a very useful time to begin GRE tutoring so your tutor can make sure that you're studying for the correct version of the test.
