Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session the student covered the relationship between sine and cosine, namely that they are Pythagorean and that sine^2(x) * cosine^2(x) = r^2, and we also covered how to draw the sine, cosine, tangent, secant and co-secant functions on a graph. Using a graph we saw how the relationship of sine and cosine looked throughout the entire trig circle, namely that the values of sine and cosine make up the lengths of the sides of a right triangle with 1 being the length of the hypotenuse. After that we looked at how to graph some of these functions. We also manipulated a few base functions and saw how different changes were reflected on a graph."
"I helped the student complete her homework assignment that involved polynomials and rational functions. We reviewed how to find the bounds on the functions as well as the horizontal and vertical asymptotes. We also went over logarithm problems, with which the student is very good at moving through quickly. Her confidence in math seems to be improving along with her problem solving skills."
"In this session we covered graphs of sine and tangent functions. I showed her how to plot basic graphs of each of the trig functions. We also covered amplitude and period as well as shifting the graph left or right."
"We corrected some of the student's past quiz mistakes in preparation for her test, and sorted through the chapter to make sure she had a good understanding of everything (which she does). We spent some time on ACT reading as well, doing two practice passages and talking about general strategies for Saturday."
"We discussed the absolute value function; how to graph it, set-valued functions, and solving equations with absolute value. The student was uncomfortable at first but by the end of the session he made considerable progress."
"The student and I first walked through some of the vector addition problems. We solved one problem and talked through an example she and her teacher had already solved, and then worked through a couple of different ways to think about similar problems. We then talked briefly about the assessment, and I ran through a quick introduction to probability and some problem solving strategies for these tests. We agreed to meet for the next session on Saturday."
