Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent a short time going over a few concepts concerning cylinders. Likewise, we quickly reviewed a data-interpretation question that the student had. After that, much of the session was devoted to combinations, permutations, and probability. I assigned these problems from the text. I began a review of mean, median, and mode problems, assigning ten problems from this chapter. Finally, I assigned a small count of problems from the "number properties" chapter in the text."
"We looked at both math and writing strategies. In the analytical writing section, you are critiquing another person's hypothesis. It's important to distinguish the facts that are given (and inarguable) from the assumptions used to interpret those facts. Faulty assumptions can and should be challenged with clear statements of their impact on the underlying question. In math, remember that powers of numbers can be combined only when the base is the same. We also talked about time management issues in the math section. Be sure to skim each question and see whether it falls within your skill set. Go quickly! Don't waste time reading questions you don't know how to answer."
"The student and I met for another session of tutoring. For math we worked on percentages, symbol functions, and data interpretation. Once I went over each area, the student was quick to pick it up. We also did verbal practice."
"Today we talked about the mechanisms of the examination, and did an overview of the quantitative section to determine strengths and weaknesses. Overall, she is a very fast individual and easily learn concepts well."
"I covered numerous questions that were rated as "high difficulty" according to the practice exam. The student scored as high as 720 on the GMAT practice tests. I encouraged her to take two GMAT practice tests. Overall, she is likely to score high on the GMAT."
"The student took a practice exam recently, and his scores are up! 145 isn't where he wants to end up, but it is an improvement. More improvement will come! We focused on his worst section on that test, Logic Games, discussing the first and third games in depth, and doing a sketch for the fourth. He's going to practice those games with the new sketches and keep reviewing the test for next session, which we'll probably devote to Logical Reasoning."
