Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, the student and I finished the physics content review, after talking through simple harmonic motion, and atomic/nuclear phenomena. We also reviewed the basics of the human immune system since she had not covered that topic in her anatomy class at school. At this point, the student has completed content review for the physics, gen chem, and verbal sections. She and I plan on reviewing carbohydrates/amino acids, as well as some organic reaction fundamentals, as well as bio, once she has read the chapters on the different systems. We created a topic map, to help her group concepts together. We will continue to meet to review the material, but focus more on problem-solving strategies and what to do when you aren't familiar with a question type."
"Discussed standardized test goals. Applied a post-test review strategy to another standardized test. Looked at verbal passages and discussed strategies. Practiced applying them together on a verbal passage. Looked at calendar and agreed on required work. Analyzed physics passage related to x-ray radiation. Analyzed organic chemistry passage, related to an aldol self-condensation mechanism."
"The student and I met for the first time today. We discussed general studying strategies to prepare for the MCAT. She identified areas of focus in the MCAT that she would like to review in the few times we have over Christmas break. We reviewed the basics of much of the biology questions that she had. She will be working on practice questions regarding the subsections of biology that we reviewed today from her book for next time."
"The student and I finished Organic Chemistry today, and because it was her last session, we did a quick overview of General Chemistry topics, while providing heightened focus on electrochemistry, as she felt most uncertain about that topic. We also went over test taking strategies and studying strategies as she approaches test day."
"Today we covered elimination reactions, Zeitsev's rule, Markovnikov's rule, electricity and male reproductive systems. We did problems to go along with it and she will be taking a practice test over the weekend."
"Today, the student and I began with an amino acids quiz. He could only correctly label about half of them at first; however, later in the session when I quizzed him again, he only missed a few. We then continued doing the quiz until he knew them all. We also began working on physics. He did several practice passages covering a variety of important concepts on the MCAT, and together, we worked through the answers he got wrong. This gave us a better idea of some of his weak areas in the subject. He is right on pace and needs to continue working hard to keep on schedule. We will discuss a more rigid and detailed study schedule at next session, now that we are 6 weeks out from the test."
