Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Our session today was over science. We completed the drills and he did much better overall. I also had him take a practice English test, and he received a 29 (4 points better than his intro test I think). Definitely a nice increase. At the end of the session, we looked over his math test and corrected the mistakes. At this point, he needs to take as many practice tests as possible."
"Note: We worked on the student's homework packet first. She had a lot of work to correct in math. She did not understand the concept of math families (i.e. 3+4=7, 4+3+7, 7-3=4, 7-4=3). I made up several more math families besides the homework since she was having trouble with the concept. She was smiling and doing "high 5's" before I left, because she "got it.""
"Today we went over another assignment. The material covered solving for x using a mix of all the different trig identities: sum and difference formulas, half angles, etc. I showed her how to just treat the problem as if she were working an algebra problem, and it seemed to help. I think she understands this material very well, it just requires a lot of work."
"For our Spanish session this week, the student and I began with a review of the days of the week, the months, and greetings. After practicing that for a while, we talked about weather expressions. She read the English and Spanish versions of phrases, then practiced saying them, and then matched the English and Spanish versions of the same phrase. As usual, she's catching on quickly!"
"Our session began with me introducing the tw blend. The student had the opportunity to practice this blend in her reading and writing. We then played two games to reinforce her reading skills. Awesome job!"
"The student scored a 26 on the practice math test she took this past week. This is a great improvement to go along with the good scores in reading and English over the past two weeks. I am excited that we can continue to build on this and put these good individual scores together when the time comes to take the full test."
"We began our first session with an introduction to the SAT. We focused on the skills and strategies that should be utilized when taking the exam, as well as examining the main parts of the SAT. We completed 30 practice questions for the Sentence Completion section and the student wrote down all vocabulary terms that she did not understand. For the next session, she will have completed the index cards for these vocabulary terms and will study them. She has made significant progress after continued support in understanding how to eliminate choices and distinguish the correct answer."
"Went over the physics material with the student and explained the concepts like momentum, impulse, and Newton's 3rd law which are the core to understanding the principles of the subject. He asks for clarification when he needs it and works hard to get a full understanding of the concepts being presented. I look forward to future sessions with him."
"The student and I worked on converting decimals to fractions, we started reviewing solving algebraic equations. We also reviewed rounding, adding, multiplying, subtracting and dividing decimals and fractions."
"The student and I spent most of the session reviewing his last exam. The student was able to recall his approach to the problems when he took the exam, which made it easier to identify problem areas. The exam mostly covered geometric and arithmetic sequences and the formulas associated."
"Before this session, I took 15 minutes of my time to give feedback to the student regarding the previews essay he did about fashion. It was a comparing and contrasting essay which he will be editing this week. During class, we reviewed every homework assignment. We covered the subjunctive and did some activities in class. We also brainstormed some ideas for his next essay, which will be about food."
"Today we focused on Trig and English. We read 25 pages of Fahrenheit 451 and answered study questions about them. We also reviewed logarithms and equations with exponents, which he recalled quickly once I reintroduced the topic. I then gave him the short answer portion of the exam. He finished almost all of it within an hour and 45 minutes except for a couple of minor finishing touches. I have reviewed what he has answered and almost all of it appears correct. Granted, I guided him on a couple of questions but for the most part he didn't need my help, just the confidence boost. I plan on going over this test with him and finishing Fahrenheit 451 during our next session."
