Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We are now in the final stretch as the student is taking the exam next Saturday. The main issue in preparing students for the ISEE is their willingness to practice on their own and the amount of time given to prepare for the exam itself. The student is now doing work independently. Our sessions are successful. My focus has been on strategies, content, and practice problems. I also work on building students' confidence. I am working hard to increase the student's motivation and to instill the knowledge necessary for her to obtain an acceptable exam score. I soon will be talking to a contact from the school and hope to learn what scores are deemed acceptable for admittance into that school. I will be sure to share any information I receive."
"I am so proud of the student! As I mentioned in last session's notes, she was really struggling with some Pre-Algebra concepts that are necessary for the ISEE. On Friday's session I actually brought my laptop to show her some interactive websites and PowerPoint on the concepts of radicals and equations. We spent forty minutes of our session just going over these concepts and I am so pleased to say that she completely got them. We have conquered radicals and equations and she is no longer intimidated by them! Next session I will be teaching her how to avoid performing that Math on the exam (ironically), but I wanted her to be competent with them just in case she didn't understand the question, etc. We spent the rest of the time going over graphs, Geometry, and more algebraic formulas. I left one of my books with them so she could study her geometric formulas as review (areas, perimeters, volume, angles, etc.) before our next session, which is today. It was a great session overall and very productive."
"First I had the student read to me from the novel she is reading. I stopped her and asked her questions about some of the vocabulary (including questions about the root, prefix, suffix, etc.); story segments (e.g. character, setting, problem, solution); as well as questions to assess her general reading comprehension. She then answered two dozen vocabulary practice questions including phonemic sequencing, vocabulary recognition, and prediction. She then did a set of reading comprehension questions, including a short writing prompt. She did a very good job on content for all the practice questions. I told her I would try and locate specific sample questions in order to practice test taking under similar conditions during our next session. I will also compile some test taking tips which she can learn in order to improve accuracy and confidence."
