Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"My first tutoring session with the student went well. As he expressed in our introductory call, h ehas previously taken the exam, and he needs help on the Verbal section of the exam, particularly Sentence Correction. We started our session by going over the Sentence Correction section of the review and focused on sentences involving idioms. I encouraged him to work through the answer choices one at a time and eliminate choices one by one instead of comparing all of the answer choices to each other. Then we discussed his approach to his previous exam. I learned from the student and his wife that he had been using at least three different sources of study materials and strategies to prepare for his exam. This resulted in him trying to apply all the different methods to each question. I also discovered that he has been solving many of the questions in each section in his head without physically crossing off the answer choices for process of elimination. I suggested that he use the problem solving strategies that work best for him, regardless of what works for other people. I also encouraged him to write down the answer choice letters for each question and cross them out to find the best answer, especially in Data Sufficiency and Sentence Correction. For our next session, he will continue to review the questions he answered incorrectly in the Sentence Correction section of the guide, work through them with methodical focus, and identify the sentences that he still has trouble understanding."
"The student and I covered grammar concepts, including parallelism and placement of modifiers, that are tested in the Sentence Correction section. We did practice questions for each topic."
"The student and I spent two hours covering a variety of quantitative problems involving fractions, weighted averages and data sufficiency. He had just reviewed these topics in his GMAT strategy guide and wanted to tackle some questions head-on. Overall, I'd say he's still working on his approach to formulating the right equation in solving the quantitative problems. That said, he improved over the course of our session and I'm optimistic he'll continue to improve over time. I told him to keep studying his GMAT guides - they are giving him confidence and I suspect he will perform even better in our next session."
