Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we reviewed the math section that the student completed for homework. We focused on working through a number of math problems during the remainder of the session. Several of the questions covered challenging concepts including exponents, quadratic equations, and volume of cylinders and pyramids. Thus, we spent additional time reviewing those concepts and creating a step-by-step approach to solving problems involving those concepts. For homework I assigned a math section and a reading section."
"Today we covered all sections but focused on Writing, Math, and English. For Writing, I showed the student the structure of a model essay and discussed what ACT essay graders look for. We practiced outlining a couple of essays. For English, the section with which the student is struggling most, we reviewed several grammar rules such as subject/verb agreement and the rules of possessives. She seemed to find this very helpful (some of the rules were previously unfamiliar to her). For Math, I went over some shortcuts with the student so that she can save time on this section and use it for Reading."
"I gave the student another set of vocab words and roots, again double because she won't be able to meet next week. I coached the student through a worksheet on trigonometry, and we reviewed the trig that she has been learning in school. We again worked a number of grammar exercise handouts on the proper use of commas. The student still has trouble with the commas, but is making progress because she's quicker than last week. I assigned her to finish the rest the remaining comma and trig exercises as well as study vocab on her own before the next time we meet."
