"Today we worked on using trig functions to get components. The student struggled only slightly when setting some problems up. She maintained a positive attitude during the session. I included strategies to keep the concepts straight."
"We covered a great deal of material in this session -- much of it was concerning the verification of trig identities. I advised the student to look for parts of the equation that look similar to known identities, especially when exponents are involved. We also reviewed a test that he had taken and went over his missed answers. At this point, he's got a very good grasp of the material, particularly when it comes to the unit circle, working with radian to degree conversions. He is a great student -- his only problem is that he will rush through things. We are working on slowing things down a bit and being as thorough as possible."
"Today, we worked on the remaining topics for the student's retake test tomorrow. We practiced writing in interval notation and understanding the discriminant. We also worked on rewriting a quadratic written in the form ax^2z+bx^z+c=0 so that it is factorable."
"We reviewed finding the equation for parabolas in a review sheet along with complex numbers. In the same packet we worked on expanding a polynomial given both real and complex roots. We then shifted over to a beginning trigonometry packet that focused on the idea of angles and how it applies to a circle. We got completely through both packets and the student had a strong grasp on all the concepts."
"In this session we prepared for an upcoming exam that covered the law of sines and law of cosines. We focused in particular on how to apply these laws to solve word problems and find sides or angles of a parallelogram. The student seemed to make considerable gains in constructing figures from word problems and identifying which laws to use and where after constructing said figures."
"In today's session, we focused on a few of the student's homework assignments, which focused mainly on complex planes and DeMoivre's theorem. She was given the standard form of a complex equation and asked to find the trigonometric form, asked to find the product/ quotient of two equations, and also asked to graph complex planes. She picked up most of the material quickly; her only difficulty came with finding angles. To help her with this we did a few extra problems and broke down how graphing the equation helps determine our angle. She did well using DeMoivre's theorem, so for sections she felt comfortable with I let her do most of the solving, only stepping in if she needed assistance. I also reviewed some of the work she did on her own to double check it; from our few sessions together I can tell she's becoming more knowledgeable and more confident with the material."
