Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed how to organize and prepare for a biology exam. We worked an assignment on making a data table and a graph of the data. The student was a fast learner. I encouraged him to plan ahead and set aside time each day to study biology, so he won't have to cram for an exam."
"We discussed the frequency and schedule of future sessions. Having established a schedule, we moved on to specific details of the future sessions. We briefly discussed what had been talked about in lecture the previous day: Mendelian genetics, generation labels, and monohybrid Punnett squares. We briefly reviewed previous high school work to establish a foundation of knowledge. The student seems eager to approach the subject matter of the class and all should go well for the remaining semester."
"During this session, a homework sheet on kinematics word problems was completed, reviewed, and discussed. Additionally, other kinematics word problems from recent homework were also reviewed. Lastly, gravity, vectors, and projectile motion regarding kinematics were briefly introduced as these topics are beginning to be covered in class."
"The student and I spent time reviewing significant figures from our last session. He seemed to have a much stronger grasp of the subject matter today after the review. We then went through his homework and worked on using dimensional analysis to solve density questions. Finally we did some problems on states of matter. We will probably do some more review of density and dimensional analysis the next time we meet."
"The student and I discussed how his teacher grades, different ways to teach physics, and some strategies for getting the most points on assignments. Then, we discussed kinematic equations and worked through a couple of problems which he had been assigned."
"We went over a lot of vocabulary that can be expected for the first week or two of school, including important points like heterogeneous vs homogeneous mixtures, intensive vs extensive properties, physical changes/ properties vs chemical changes/ properties, and filtration and distillation. This is a lot of memorization, so I have a vocabulary list as well as a PowerPoint that I will send to the student. It can be difficult to get through so much vocabulary in one session. We also briefly mentioned what to expect in early labs (emphasis on safety), and mentioned the metric system since some teachers decide to start with that instead. She was very attentive and clearly taking notes throughout the session."
