Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had to go back over all of the flashcards she has worked on so far (2, 4, 5, and 10). I was very happy that she had remembered all of the facts she has learned so far- it seems to be much more immediate. I also had her do a worksheet on patterns in multiplication, which confused her at first, but she eventually understood it. I've also found that she likes to read more when we trade off reading each page, so I think I will continue to do this with the hope that it will create a love for reading in her."
"Today we began with subtraction and addition flash cards 1-17. Soon we will move on to 17-30. Next, the student completed a clock worksheet. Following this she did three-digit plus two-digit addition and then a portion of a money math work page. To finish off the last five minutes, we did the addition dice game. Her mental math skills are improving greatly as well as her ability to know addition and subtraction problems off the top of her head."
"Our session started by reviewing the sounds of the alphabet and requiring the student to make words and sentences using specific sounds in specific places of the word (e.g., beginning, middle, and end). Since she has started our sessions, she has made significant improvement in this area. She is now sounding out words independently and will attempt words more freely. We continue to co-read math word problems, as this has been one of her largest struggles. She is required to read certain "keywords" identified in the sentence but is not required to read the entire thing. This has improved her ability to willingly read during our sessions. She continues to demonstrate increased knowledge with her math skills. She is adding 2-3 digit numbers independently and is regularly using different strategies we have discussed previously."
"I tutored each child 1 hour each. With Student 1, we went over number placement value. He seemed to pick it up quickly. Also, we went over a reading comprehension worksheet. He struggles with reading and is not reading at an appropriate level for his age. I will go back to fundamental pronunciation to strengthen where he is weak. Student 2 is not too far behind in reading comprehension. He only has an issue with making his answers too vague. I sent more practice for them both."
"Concepts covered: Decimal multiplication using the graph model and the vertical layout. The concept of place value was reinforced because the student was having difficulties when applying it in exercises. The use of place value charts with different colors to highlight the tenth and hundredths was really helpful, as well as the hundreds chart. We also revised word problems, and I encouraged her to underline or circle keywords as well as show her work. She had an excellent attitude and seems more confident."
"We reviewed the student's coin homework and went over practice problems covering +10, +100 and numbers in expanded form. We will continue working on -10 and -100 problems as well as review "time" and go more in depth with coins. She worked hard and had a fantastic attitude! She will be completing the diagnostic test question by the next session. We had so many wins on her correct answers! She did a great job."
