Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student struggled a bit with today's concepts in chemistry, but he was able to understand the new concepts by the end of the session. We reviewed isotopes and ions and moved on to the topics of molecules compounds and ionic bonding."
"During this session significant figures, scientific notation, and changing SI units using statistical/ dimensional analysis were reviewed by creating practice problems and going over a recent un-graded quiz in preparation for the upcoming quiz."
"Today, we reviewed the student's chemistry homework assignments. He showed a reasonable level of understanding of the material even before starting the homework questions themselves. The only concepts he did not grasp immediately dealt with the relationship between an element's group on the periodic table and the resulting cation/ anion that the element forms when ionized, as well as how to appropriately combine the given cation and anion to make a stable molecule. However, once I explained these concepts to him, he was able to demonstrate his understanding of them."
"Today we discussed density, mass, and volume in preparation for a quiz. The student does well when learning concepts, but has difficulty remembering how to use mathematical formulas. We went over numerous times that dv=m. With more practice, he will remember when he is taking the quiz."
"The student and I continue working through the diagnostic exam for the SAT subject test. During this lesson, we moved through multiple choice problems, and covered such topics as amphoteric compounds, the autoionization of water, acid/ base properties of cyanide, how to calculate Ka, limewater and carbon dioxide, pH and pOH, and determining rates of effusion (sqr(M1/M2)). He was enthusiastic and got a number of problems right on his own."
"In today's session the student completed a worksheet on homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures for homework in his chemistry class. We reviewed the differences between each type of mixture using his class notes, then used the notes for the first part of the worksheet. About halfway through the first part he really started to understand the topic and was able to complete the rest of the worksheet without the help of his notes. We are going to review this material a little bit in our session tomorrow, but I want tomorrow's focus to be on math concepts."
