Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Checked in on Math sections student had read & reviewed in study guide book since last session. Talked about plans to work with sister on Math intensively by using practice tests and relevant sections of book. Gave vocab list. Intro'd & explained vocab routine, goals, & weekly plan to finish list in 5 weeks. Continued analyzing student answer/reasoning vs correct answer/reasoning question by question, and discussing strategies in (Critical Reading) Section 2 of 1st practice test. Student seems prepared, highly motivated, & eager to learn/improve."
"The student and I spent the first hour working through some sentence correction, word choice, and reading passages. The remainder of our time was spent working through multiple choice math and a few grid-ins."
"Today we went over the student's diagnostic test, which she did well on. We also went over how it's important to prepare at least five sources for the SAT essay - she will list her five sources and important information about them for the next session. I also gave her a vocabulary quiz, which I will grade for the next session. We then went over various grammatical topics in depth, including ones we had seen before (parallelism, subject-verb agreement) and ones we had only previously touched upon (modifier problems, pronoun usage). I assigned her hw. For math, we went over exponents, roots, and counting problems (we especially focused on the counting problems). I gave her math and reading hw."
"We went through a math section, a reading section, and most of a writing section. She picked it back up pretty quickly and knew most of the content. She was very strong in math. With writing I noticed she got most of the questions right and understood what the SAT was looking for. We will definitely work on pacing. I'm looking forward to our next session next Sunday!"
"Introductory session, mainly diagnostic - The student and I worked through a few math problems and critical reading questions. His math fundamentals are solid -- we will focus on strategy and application. We will also focus on strengthening his critical reading skills and vocabulary."
"This was our first session, so we concentrated on analyzing his strengths and weaknesses. The student is to complete a diagnostic test for me for tomorrow. Today we talked most about critical reading and developed a strategy for justifying answer choices. He is looking for a significant score increase, so we will have to go back to basics to amp up his potential."
"We covered geometry today. I taught the student basic concepts, and she learned quickly how to apply them. Now she will need to work on retention in preparation for the SAT. I will quiz her next time on what we covered today."
"The student continues to do well. I plan to cover with him the essential details of the SAT and encourage him to not work too quickly. The most important part is teaching him how to keep his focus for an entire test. As such, he will be doing more practice tests."
"This was my first session with the student since she took the SAT. I'm happy to hear our work helped her increase her score by 200 points and she now is scoring in the 2100-plus range. We focused today on critical reading and the essay. For critical reading, we worked on answering questions for the short passages. She had trouble with "purpose" questions, so I told her when she can't decide between two answers, she should reread the passage for a second impression to determine which answer is correct. Next I gave her an essay prompt and gave her 25 minutes to write the essay. It will be graded by the next session. We ended the session with a math quiz and went over the one problem she missed."
"We began with a practice math test, and she got only two wrong. We'll look at the qualitative section next time. Then we talked about reading strategies, and she did a practice reading section. We spent some time on the last passage because it was quite complex, filled with long, odd sentences and lots of imagery. It was a good piece to practice with for finding the main point of a passage."
"Today the student and I focused on the math section of the SAT. We worked on difficult word problems, percentages, strange symbol operators, and geometry. She did a great job solving problems on her own. I will be sending her more resources to review."
"We went over the rest of the student's Diagnostic Test #3. As the date of his SAT test is approaching, we began reviewing studied vocabulary in addition to studying new high frequency words. I also provided a list of prefixes, suffixes, and roots he can memorize previous to his test. I assigned him an SAT practice test so that he can get a better idea of his performance level. His major needs for improvement are vocabulary and speed so we will be concentrating on those two areas for the following sessions."
