Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session. After some of the normal preliminaries and general recommendations, we set to work on the diagnostic tests found in the prep book. I anticipate things going very well in this regard. She will need to work a bit more on vocabulary for the verbal section, but her general reasoning is fine in this regard. It is more of a "material" than a "formal" affair. We duly reviewed several applicable concepts for chapters 7 and 8 of the text (arithmetic and algebra), and I assigned these as well as 1-35 of the text completions."
"The student and I met for our final session of GRE tutoring. In this session we first read over some sample essays to give him a better idea about what was expected by the test. We then moved to math. We spent the session working on coordinate geometry."
"We focused on reviewing the questions the student had difficulty with in the Reading Comprehension section of the Official Guide to the GMAT 13th edition. He answered most of the questions correctly and understood the questions he got wrong. By using the simplified strategies I suggested, he has seen improvement in his performance on the Reading Comprehension section. He is moving through the passage in less time and answering more of the questions correctly. We then discussed the benefits of answering a question in your own words before reading the answer, including focusing on the question in front of you and finding the correct answer more quickly."
"I covered the topics of ratios, fractions, percents, and proportions. I also reviewed numerous math problems involving coordinate planes and 2D polygons. Overall, the student has shown great improvement."
"Reviewed preparation strategy for the coming weeks, emphasizing the need to develop a schedule and block time for specific activities based on relative strengths and weaknesses. Did a couple of critical reasoning practice tests."
"Once through the flashcards (multiplication tables, squares/cubes/roots, and factorials) and then a tour of simple and compounded interest, finishing in the second hour with a selection of Adam Smith questions and sentence corrections for noun-noun agreement. For tomorrow--revisit logarithms and interest rates, plus punctuation."
"The student and I finished covering math topics, including probability and statistics, and I gave him corresponding practice questions."
"Student and I went over sentence completions and geometry. He did great with angles and triangles. He picked up all the concepts and formulas very quickly. Multi-blank sentence completions are particularly difficult for him so I assigned extra practice."
"We went through more quantitative practice problems to prepare her for her exam. We covered topics included exponentials, foiling formulas, and interpreting word problems into equations."
"The student is supposed to take a practice test this weekend. I should have a better idea of how she's doing from there."
"Worked on GRE essays and other verbal exercises in advance of her Tuesday test. Also discussed her video assignment."
"I went over the practice questions that the student had trouble with. Many of these were probability questions as well as some combination and permutation problems. We then discussed the graph/ data questions on the test and how to approach these problems. We also discussed distance problems, some algebra questions, and looked at various types of practice questions."
