Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session we focused on vocabulary and reading comprehension. The student completed her homework for school with me and we tried practicing some of the words she learned last time. I think it would help the student if she were to keep writing down words she does not know on her vocabulary worksheet and study them from time to time. We went over how to do it during the session. The student should continue to read out loud every night and note down words to learn. From now on, we will be focusing more closely on vocabulary and on speaking."
"We focused on inferencing through the duration of the session. The student showed a great understanding of inferencing."
"The student and I worked on her phonetics and reading skills. It's been difficult finding an reading exercise that keeps her attention, so we have been trying all sorts of things. Today, we tried involving physical movement by combining letters written on pieces of paper on the ground into word using feet. The student caught on quickly, but also lost interest. The other student loved the exercise described above, and quickly mastered it. We went through her word practice homework involving rhyming and sentence creation, and then worked on her approach to multiplication problems."
"The student had reviewed some of his science material already, so we were able to focus on the foundations of atoms and elements (which he had not). With a little prodding, he can often explain something. He generally understands how atoms and elements function, including how to use the various diagrams and formulas. He said today that he felt he did much better with his final exams this year, especially with English (his most challenging subject)."
"We worked on reading and writing. I had both girls read from an IRI, and they are both reading above level! I plan to work with them with their personal choice books, and use writing workshop strategies."
"The student and I worked on an upcoming essay today and did some heavy review of the books he had to use. He is definitely capable of the work and was able to come up with some ideas with me in explaining how and what he wanted to write, but the largest problem lay in simply writing down the ideas that were discussed. We will work on this more next session."
