Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the student's draft of an essay about a Chinese-American writer. He really liked the story, had a good grasp of the characters. His sociology studies actually helped us to see the symbolism in the story. We worked more on the story, and then he emailed it to me later and we edited it. The result was, I believe, a good take on the story in the student's words, and undoubtedly his view."
"The student and I met for our first session to help her prepare for her exam on the following day (10/11). We worked through problems that she had trouble with on old quizzes, and discussed how to apply these ideas to other problems in general."
"We continued reviewing math and delved into some basic geometry principles as well. When she applies herself she does very well. "
"I met Student 1 and 2 and began working with them individually. We reviewed the format and content of the exam, reviewed sample questions, and discussed general strategies for taking the tests. I assigned a practice exam and sample essay prompt for our next meeting. I also gave the students a vocabulary list."
"Today, the student and I worked on the reading section of the SAT. We started out going over general strategies, what the different questions types are, the best way to approach certain question types, how to effectively use process of elimination, etc. Then we went over the reading section of her PSAT. The online score report included all of the questions, so we went over all of the questions that she got wrong or eliminated from the reading sections."
"I met with the student to discuss our goal of tutoring. We went over a discussion of topics to cover the learning styles preferred by the student. We went over essay questions and made a list of Spanish topics she could incorporate into answers. Next tutoring session will focus on formation of essay answers and include the student answering in Spanish."
"We went over the rest of the math test and were able to cover graphing of quadratic formulas via identifying key intercepts, vertices, and parabola shapes. Our focus was on using definitions in order to intuit the next step for a problem. The student needs more work still to get caught up in his material for class. We will be meeting more often in order to get to the other classes."
"The student and I focused on covering a lot of the basics today. We discussed basic geometry and reviewed problem sets involving fractions and inequalities. The student is a very quick learner and did not have trouble picking up any concepts."
"Algebra: We worked on catching the student up on how to factor polynomials. Specifically we worked on factoring quadratic equations. Biology: We reviewed the chapter on bacteria which included the different types of bacteria, how one would identify them and why bacteria is useful."
"We covered some Geometry (triangles & circles), word problems and series questions. The student has committed to solve one Math section for SAT every night! She is very bright and I expect excellent improvement/results for her May test."
"We looked at some math problems that the student did over the past week and then worked through a passage-based section. We ended the session by reviewing the general studying strategies that we've talked about, along with some of the particular strategies for the different sections of the SAT. She is mostly doing well and I've noticed some improvement."
"Good day today. We did several examples of taking limits using the squeeze theorem. We also discussed sequences and how to tell if they are bounded or monotonically increasing or decreasing."
