"The student read 2 chapters from "The Watsons Go To Birmingham," during our session. Her mother mentioned that the student will have to answer questions about each book read over the summer, so she wanted me to help the student organize her thoughts and take some notes about the books. After the student read each chapter, we created visual notes on the setting, plot, and characters. We identified the characters present in each chapter and put their names in circles. We also talked about how each chapter has a theme and a title that's like a riddle, which can only be decoded by reading the chapter. She has 3 chapters to go, to finish this book."
"Today was our first session so I wanted to get a feel for the student's level and ability. I gave her a few comprehension and decoding strategies to use while reading, such as doing a picture walk, and looking at smaller words inside bigger words. She also read a few books that she checked out from the library. We found that using her finger to point to each word as she read helped improve her fluency. We also spoke about how reading the same book several times will help to gain fluency and word recognition abilities."
"The student and I completed an academic intake interview wherein his strengths and challenges were identified. At the end, his fluency, accuracy, comprehension, written expression, and decoding capabilities were tested with a variety of grade level texts. The last few minutes of our session were used to teach him the power of reading for accuracy instead of for speed."
