Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we looked at factoring polynomials; specifically focusing on difference of two squares. The student had not yet seen these in class, and was unfamiliar with the necessary steps. I factored a few polynomials to show him the process, and then I had him complete selected problems from his textbook. After the first couple, he became comfortable with the process and was able to quickly finish the work I assigned him. He was even able to use the factoring to solve a set of word problems concerning area. Before I left, I asked him to work another set of similar problems before our next session to ensure that he continued to practice."
"The student and I picked up where we left off working with exponents. He has had some trouble wrapping his head around negative exponents in the past, but made a notable breakthrough this time. We also practiced simplifying complex fractions, which the student is very comfortable with, and then finished with solving systems of two equations for two variables, which he is picking up quickly but will need a bit more practice to master."
"We almost finished going over the review problems given to the student by his professor. He was having a bit of trouble with the word problems involving mixtures, D=RxT, and the partial completion problems. He was concerned that he wouldn't be able to remember how to do all of the problems for the test. I did spend a little time talking about what kinds of things are important to memorize and what things should be derived on the fly. I also talked a little with him about how important sleep is the night before a test as it allows for neurotransmitter regeneration. I will be writing up a practice test and administering it to the student during the next session."
"Today, the student revised a test that covered graphing functions. We then reviewed for the student's final exam. The student understood all of the questions with some assistance, and she should get a perfect score on her revisions. She will keep working on her review, and we will meet again next week to finish preparing for her final exam."
"We began the student's final review packet today. Word problems seem to be the biggest concern for today's material, so we talked through a couple real world examples, and will review further examples next time. I left her with the task of trying to complete as much of her packet as she can on her own, and we will review the rest in our next session. We also made notes of flags and tricks to help her remember how to approach the test questions. I think a win for today is how easily she grasped the concepts of maximizing objective functions! She's doing great!"
"Today, we focused on an intense 100+ question review packet for the student's final. We went over graphs, equations, sequences, etc. Once the student was able to solve for some missing information, she got it. I think a calculator is allowed, and if it is it, it will help her tremendously. I would recommend maybe practicing mental math to help her speed in case there is limited time on the test."
