"We focused on math only. His English is stronger than his math so we are working to improve his math scores."
"We started by going over vocabulary. Last week, the student asked for a list of prefixes, suffixes, roots. Today, I brought my laptop and showed her my favorite easy-to-use online etymology resources. We took a few words she's been having trouble with and broke them down. We compiled lists of words that shared the same prefixes. I've been using a vocabulary website with some of my other students, and I like it, so I showed it to the student. She made an account and we made lists of current vocab words and her prefix-learning words. Then, we went through some questions, practicing the strategy of the covering up the answers, making a guess, then ruling out the wrong answers before picking the correct choice. We worked on her arithmetic skills, mainly with fractions, decimals, and percentages. We talked about multiplying and dividing fractions and converting between all three above number types. We looked at quantity comparison questions. The student completed a page full of that type of problem, and this gave her the chance to practice finding rates, averages, and basic algebraic quantities."
"For this week's session, I thought it would be a good idea to focus more heavily on word problems and help the student learn the clues written into such math questions that could help her find the answer. She did pretty well. I started working with her on building up her confidence and told her I wouldn't just solve the question for her. I kept asking her questions to nudge her in the right direction until she could solve the question for herself. I also gave her a list of keywords that will help her figure out which operation the question is asking her to use. On the flip side of her preparation, she is getting good at figuring out the meaning of words within context. She whipped right through some of our reading comprehension exercises. Her essay writing is also coming along quite nicely as she's much better at conveying specific arguments and her spelling is improving. For next week, I want to start reviewing everything we've learned and focus solely on synonym exercises for vocab."
