Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week, we worked through some issues with loading images, and got the program assignment working. I also took the opportunity to introduce the concept of Loops by modifying the code from a long string of repeated commands to a shorter looping version. There were no homework issues, so next week we will visit regular class homework, if any, and convert our simple program into a bit more of a fun game."
"We reviewed a few aspects of one of the student's assignments from last time (box tracing the screen). He is to change this to add the "semi-reflection" that we discussed. We then spent a good deal of time working on the basics of Swing programming. I assigned for him to alter a program we worked on, adding a number of button inputs for changing the color of a text input area (both foreground and background)."
"This week, the student and I reviewed two of his labs, and set him up to successfully complete a third. The labs concentrated a lot on the ability to combine methods into easy and quick solutions. The student and I discussed the idea of memory allocation and how return types work, and how one function/method can return a value that is then used in a new method. He is clearly becoming much more confident in his ability to manipulate Java and has started to see how computer science builds on itself into a usable whole (rather than seeing loops, whiles, and variables as separate entities)."
"We covered Java input/output, vectors, arrayList, red and black trees, binary search trees, and reviewed code and other documents. She asked about how she can check to see if a number is within range based on her teacher's specifications. I reviewed her for loop for the range question."
"We worked on prepping for the student's midterm. The strategy for the coming week was to use in class presentations and work assigned by me to review material covered in class up to this point in the semester. The student was prepared and attentive. At our next session, we will continue to review for the exam by using practice questions assigned by me."
