Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I discussed the concepts for Social Studies competencies 22 and 23 in economics and citizenship/government. She seemed to understand these concepts well, though there is some vocabulary that she'll need to review. We also began identifying key events, figures, and dates for the history competency - number 20. Some mnemonic devices that I provided helped. She will study her flashcards and review her notes before we meet again, possibly completing practice exercises in math and history. If she desires, she can complete practice test #1 from the CN book (photocopy handout), but this is not required."
"Studied for her algebra test on quadratics (factoring, graphing, finding the roots and vertex.) She seemed to really understand the mistakes she made and felt confident about how to work the problems. We then reviewed her homework covering logarithms."
"The student and I went through an entire science section (7 passages). She struggled with interpreting graphs and with understanding chemical equations, so we reviewed those concepts and some related strategies. We then reviewed more geometric and trigonometric concepts through selected practice problems. Finally, we made a time management plan for her test day."
"The student and I worked on tessellations and transformations. After we went over the concepts she seemed to really understand them. Several times throughout the session she remarked "Oh, I get this now!""
"On our last session, the student and I went over the vocabulary related to body parts, once again, as a form of review. She was able to point out various body parts in Spanish, with the correct pronunciation. After that activity I introduced her to the expression in Spanish of "I have" and "I do not have" ( Yo tengo, yo no tengo). With these expressions, I had her forming complete sentences, combining them with other vocabulary words, that she already knows, such as clothing items and fruits. She was able to form complete sentences, and also to describe the size and color of distinct vocabulary words. Finally, we continued with our reading in Spanish, and I asked her to identify vocabulary words in the story that she already knows."
"We reviewed the time series analysis of the process for the student's exam--they were very easily able to pick up the material and they should do fairly well on their exam. They should look through one more time on their end to make sure that they are able to interpret the time fixed effects correctly."
