Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
For each of the conic section, we reviewed what differentiated the conic section from the others (the graph and equation) and learned how to tell the important parameters of each section from its graph or equation. We reviewed how to graph a conic section from the equation and also how to determine the equation from its graph. He digested the information quickly and if a mistake was made during the practice problems, it was because of an arithmetic or algebra error. I broke the methods down into algorithms and wrote them down on a paper which I left with him to review. He just needs to review and get very comfortable with "completing the square."
Lastly, we reviewed the methods regarding the transformations of rectangular equations of conic sections to parametric form. We derived the method by using two familiar trigonometric identities to substitute into the two conic section (ellipses--circles included--, and hyperbolas) equations which could be written in an "equals 1" form. I feel the derivations are more useful/less confusing instead of just memorizing where the rectangular parameters went into the parametric equation form. He should do very well but needs a bunch of practice to reinforce the methods."
