Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on Lesson 7. She read a list of words out loud and dropped the "sh" sound. She also read the story in Lesson 7 and answered questions on a white board."
"The student's mom asked for us to focus more on reading during this session. (1) Warm up - she edited her personal narrative from our previous session and very successfully self-corrected spelling and grammar mistakes. (2) Reading - she read "The Landlady" by Ronald Dahl. She identified personality and physical traits of characters in order to use them to make inferences and predictions about the events and outcomes of the story. We also discussed the use of foreshadowing and symbolism throughout the story. She drew personal conclusions about the text, using evidence she had identified throughout. (3) Mentor text - using Dahl's story as a framework, we identified the elements and pieces that made it a good and interesting story. Once we had identified those items, she used them as tools to revise the introduction to her own mentor text. (4) Summer reading and wrap-up - we reviewed her progress in her on-going summer reading assignment, and made plans to continue with reading comp/mentor texts in our next session."
"The student had completed his homework, so I first asked him what happened in the rest of the chapter that he read. Next, I looked over his spelling sentences and we discussed them. Then I had him take a test on the words he had missed. Next, I discussed a new strategy that I want him to try when reading long words. He did an excellent job and was able to pronounce several difficult words using this method. Next, he read a passage about octopuses and their defense mechanisms to me. There were several difficult words, and we used the new technique successfully by underlining portions of the word to make smaller words/sounds. He did an excellent job on answering the reading comprehension questions afterwards, and he also did a great job on remembering new words in a word scramble exercise. Last, he read from Chapter 3 to me. He will finish the chapter before Wednesday. He is doing very well in lessons."
